Higher Pension Income Guidance
Why should the annuity buyer be careful?
Buying from your pension provider isn't always necessarily the best idea!
You may be able to secure several thousand pounds more over your lifetime from annuity providers than your current pension provider. Many are unaware of this very important information. The more information you have, the more able you will be to recognise the best deal when you see it.
What does the Financial Services Authority say about annuities?
1. The FSA state that buying an annuity is an important step and you do have choices. These choices are crucial because they affect how well-off you are in retirement.
2. The FSA say you should shop around for the best rate. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to buy an annuity for your retirement from the same company you saved your pension fund with.
3. There are key questions which you need to think about to help you choose a suitable annuity which meets your needs. Questions include "Is the annuity just for you or do you have a spouse or partner you want to provide for?" and "If you are in poor health, is a high initial income your priority?"
What is the "Open Market Option"?
"The whole team were superb." Mrs S, West Sussex
"Had I known about you sooner I would have gone through you when dealing with my other pensions. I can't fault the service at all!" Mr M, Bedfordshire
"It was significantly more than I would have got from my pension provider." Mr S, Worcestershire
"You did a lovely job and I'm seriously impressed with what you do." Ms K, London
"I got my annuity sorted in record time! It's nice to find an organisation that does exactly what it says on the tin!" Mr D, London
"You've explained everything much, much better than any other companies did." Mr T, Devon
"The staff made everything very, very easy for me." Mr R Wiltshire
"I wish my husband had discovered you before he did his annuity." Mrs S, Devon
"I think you're wonderful! I just wish I had known about you sooner!" Mrs A, London
It's also important to realise that once an annuity has been bought it cannot be changed.
What makes the Open Market Option even more attractive?
You could get even more from your annuity if you shop around. You may be eligible for an "Enhanced Annuity" (sometimes known as an Impaired Life Annuity).
This pays a higher pension income to people who suffer from a wide range of health conditions - anything from being overweight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and asthma. Smokers may also benefit from a higher income.
Even though you may regard yourself to be in quite good health, the reality can often be surprisingly different. Some think they have to suffer from a serious medical condition such as heart disease, cancer or stroke to receive extra annuity income, but a seemingly mild condition or complaint may substantially increase your annual retirement income.
Additionally, higher rates are sometimes offered to people who used to work in certain jobs or people who live in certain parts of the UK.
